Girls Caught Smuggling Cocaine Into
UK
Two 16 year old British girls were arrested at Accra airfield in Ghana
for allegedly carrying cocaine worth $300,000 said they were "set-up" to
circulate the drugs back to Britain. A statement by British Customs originally
said the two teenagers from London were seized in a joint operation with
the Ghanaian Narcotic Control Board.
Yetonde Diya and Yasemin Vatansever of Islington told their parents
they were going to France, but instead flew to Ghana June 26. They were preparing
to return to Britain when they were arrested at Accra Airfield in
Ghana.
Police allegedly found 14 pounds of cocaine in their baggage.
The newspaper said the girls are probable to stand trial before a
juvenile court in Ghana. If convicted, they would serve five to 10 years
in jail.
Officers from the Ghanaian Narcotic Control Board have been working
with Britain's HM Revenue and Customs to arrest drug smugglers who use Accra
as a gateway to Britain and Europe.
